The Benedictine Abbey of Göttweig is located at 449 m above sea level on the eastern edge of the world-famous Danube Valley of the Wachau, south of the city of Krems on the Danube - visible from the festival site at the vintners in the Sandgrube. The "Austrian Montecassino" was founded in 1083 by St. Altmann, Bishop of Passau, and handed over to the Benedictines in 1094. There are remains of the medieval buildings (Erentrudis chapel from 1072, Old Castle, crypt and choir of the church). The Baroque monastery complex was built according to the plans of the architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, after the old monastery was destroyed by fire in 1718. The special sights are the museum in the emperor's wing, the emperor's staircase with Paul Troger's ceiling fresco from 1739, the prince's and emperor's rooms and the collegiate church with crypt and cloister.
