Hannah James, our artist-in-residence who is with us all of July as planned, with a special programme that truly benefitted from the lockdown with new exciting ideas.

Program text

In a short documentary film about Hannah James the first thing we see is a pair of black leather shoes with a metal reinforcement on the toecaps. They are dancing shoes because: “My music has always started with my feet,” writes James in the booklet of her current album “The Woman And Her Words”.
Her dance virtuosity and expressive power could already be admired in the accompanying programme (table music, Musik unterm Marillenbaum) of Glatt&Verkehrt 2019. In 2020 Hannah James spends a whole month in Krems as an artist-in-residence. Although we were not able to unite the initially scheduled jigDoll Ensemble, whose members live all across Europe, the residency enabled an exciting collaboration for Hannah James: First off, the Vienna-based Iranian guitarist and composer Mahan Mirarab will be on board. His versatile yet highly individual sound language promises thrilling sonic encounters. And luckily another resident of Vienna is the Hungarian percussionist András Des, a member of Hanna James’ jigDoll Ensemble.
Hannah James, the dancer, has advanced her career as accordionist and singer enormously: Her voice, “cool and intimate” (The Guardian), is “among the most beautiful and compelling raised into the [British] folk tradition over the past decade or so” (Songlines).
