Program text

Wimme Saari is renowned for more than 30 years as one of the world’s leading joik singers. The joik chant, an ancient music of the Samis, combines everyday things (nature, animals, places, buildings, people) with profoundly spiritual, shamanistic powers. Joik is sung in a chant style without words; it has no beginning or end. The content becomes joik. Wimme also cites a very different vocal influence for his music: Sami and Karelian Church hymns that he remembers from his childhood days. In this respect, Wimme’s biography overlaps with that of Tapani Rinne. As a pioneer of Finnish experimental music and always searching for new sounds, Rinne also sees himself as deeply rooted in tradition. As collaborative partners since 1990, the duo is perfectly well attuned. Rinne and Saari and their sound designer present their music as a captivating combination of modern compositional styles with a nod to centuries-old vocal forms in the ideal acoustic of an Austrian church setting.
